 Giraffe Quilted Wall Hanging
This charming wall hanging is extremely simple to make, but charming. It's great for a children's room.

The finished size of the wall hanging is about 18" x 20". We used the Giraffe design for a mega hoop.

You will need:
  • a fat quarter of light colored solid fabric for the central part;
  • 1/4 yard of dark green fabric preferable with foliage pattern for the first border;
  • 1/4 yard of  brown fabric with animal fur print for the second border.
  • You will also need fabric for backing and binding and low-loft batting.
For embroidery, we used embroidery rayon threads, medium-weight cut-away stabilizer.
Cutting:
Out of  fabric for the central part, cut
  • a rectangle measuring 8 1/2" x 10 1/2".
Out of green fabric, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 10 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 12 1/2",
Out of brown fabric, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 3" x 14 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 3" x 18 1/2"
Assembling the Top
Sew the 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" green strips to the right and left edges of the central part.
Sew the 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" green strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Sew the 3" x 14 1/2" brown strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Sew the 3" x 18 1/2" brown strips to the upper and lower parts of the working piece.

Embroidery
Stabilize the central part of the pieced top with either medium weight or cut-away stabilizer or polyester craft felt instead of stabilizer. Baste the top to the felt in the ditch along the colored borders. After the embroidery is finished, rip the baste and cut away the excess felt around the embroidery.
Quilting:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting.  We quilted with stippling around the embroidery.

To quilt the green borders, we used the redwork designs from the Redwork Floral Border Set.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

We also embellished the corners of the quilt with decorative buttons.
The wall hanging is ready. Enjoy!
