This tutorial shows how to embroider, sew and quilt an autumn wall hanging. You stitch the girl's portrait first, then add a simple frame and a border of autumn foliage fabric. The sewing steps stay straightforward, and the embroidery is what makes the finished quilt unique.
We used the design of the Autumn Girl. The finished size of the quilt is about 19" x 21".

Embroidery:
Upload the file of the Autumn Girl design to the embroidery machine. Select the threads. Stabilize the light-colored fabric for the central part, hoop it tightly and embroider the design in the center. |
| Trim the stitch-out to 11 1/2" x 14", leaving margins of 2" around the embroidery. |
| Cutting: |
Out of the burnt orange fabric for the first border, cut:
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 11 1/2";
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 16";
- 4 squares measuring 4 1/2" each.
Use the remaining burnt orange fabric for the binding.
Out of the autumn foliage fabric for the second border, cut:
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 13 1/2";
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 22".
Assembly:
| Note: the seam allowance is 1/4". Press each seam immediately after you make it. |
Place the orange squares face down in the corners of the central part and align the sides. On each square, draw a diagonal connecting the two corners that sit on the adjacent sides of the central part. Stitch along the diagonals.
| Cut along the diagonals, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. |
| Open and press the corners. |
| Sew the 1 1/2" x 11 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part. |
| Sew the 1 1/2" x 16" strips to the left and right edges of the central part. |
| Sew the 3 1/2" x 13 1/2" patterned strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. |
Sew the 3 1/2" x 22" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface, such as a table, face down. Cover it with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted the whole piece in a free-motion style. Start with the central part. With invisible thread, lightly quilt the embroidery, following the outline of the girl's face and the line of her hair. Then, with quilting threads of matching colors, echo-quilt the embroidery and the area around it. Finally, quilt the first and the second borders. |
Press with steam. Square up the piece so that all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
| Have fun! |
