This tutorial shows you how to make a quilted table runner with embroidered daylilies. You will learn to sew the borders, add machine embroidery for the flowers, and finish with quilting stitches. The finished runner measures about 19 1/2" x 45" and works well on a dining table or sideboard.
This tablerunner is easy to piece, but requires some experience in machine embroidery. We used the designs from the Daylily Motif Set.

Embroidery:
Cut a piece of light-colored fabric measuring 17"-18" wide and the full width of the fabric. Our fabric is 44" wide. Fold the piece in half lengthwise, align the edges, and lightly press to mark the central horizontal line. Unfold, then fold widthwise, align the edges, and lightly press to mark the central vertical line. Using the paper printouts or the test stitch-outs of the designs, lay out the embroidery design on the fabric. Use the pressed lines and a quilter's ruler as a guide for correct placement. |
Upload the selected files from the Daylily Motif Set to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs one by one. |
| Remove the excess stabilizer around the embroidery. Press the working piece and trim it to 15 1/2" x 42 1/2", making sure that you leave equal margins between the edges of the fabric and stitch-outs on the opposite sides. |
| Cutting: |
From orange fabric, cut:
- 30 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
- 2 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"
From the light-colored fabric, cut:
- 28 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
- 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 44 1/2" (if your fabric is not long enough, cut shorter strips and sew them together to reach the needed length)
- 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 21 1/2"
| Cut the green fabric into strips for the binding. |
Assembly:
| Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press each seam immediately after sewing. |
The first border consists of orange and light strips sewn together. For each of the long borders you'll need 11 orange strips and 10 light strips. Sew them alternating the colors in a long 2-colored strip starting and ending with the orange ones.
| Sew the borders to the long sides of the main part. |
For each of the short borders, you'll need 4 orange strips, 1 orange square and 4 light strips. Sew them in the following order: orange strip - light strip - orange strip - light strip - orange square - light strip - orange strip - light strip - orange strip. |
| Sew the short borders to the main part. |
| Sew the 2 1/2" x 44 1/2" light strips to the long edges of the working piece, sew the 2 1/2" x 21 1/2" light strips to the short edges of the working piece. |

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface face down. Cover with batting, then spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted with matching threads in a free-motion style over the entire working piece. Start from the center and echo-quilt the embroidery first. |
| Then quilt the areas between the patterns, then proceed to the borders. |
Press with steam. Square up the piece: all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides equal in length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
| Have fun! |
