This tutorial shows how to embroider black cat designs and sew them onto kids' T-shirts for Halloween. You will stitch the cats onto fabric squares, then attach the squares to plain shirts. The finished tees work well for costumes or for everyday wear in the fall. Follow the steps to make your own set.
It is not easy to embroider small items, and the fear of ruining a good shirt often keeps us from decorating a child's clothes. Try this method instead. It is easy, and it shows you how to quickly liven up almost any T-shirt. The designs used here are from the Black Kitten Set.

You will need:
- A T-shirt in any color
- A piece of embroidery fabric that contrasts with the T-shirt
- Embroidery thread, either polyester or rayon
- Lightweight tear-away embroidery stabilizer
- A quilter's ruler, a graph or chalk pencil, and a rotary cutter or scissors
- Shears with a zig-zag edge
- An iron
- A quilter's foot and a regular presser foot
- A #12 universal needle

Embroidery:

Stabilize and hoop your fabric tightly. Load the Black Kitten Set into your machine, then embroider the designs one by one.

With the ruler and pencil, draw lines around the stitch-outs, leaving a margin of about 1/2 inch.
Cut out the patches.

Using shears with a zig-zag edge, trim the edges.
Press the stitch-out and remove the excess stabilizer around the embroidery. |

Decide where the patches will go on the front of the T-shirts, then pin them in place.
|
|
| Using the quilter's foot, topstitch the patch around the embroidery first. |
|
| Then, using the regular sewing foot, topstitch the patch in place along the outer edge, with a seam allowance of 1/8 to 1/4 inch. |
