Learn to make quilted placemats with flower embroidery. This tutorial shows the steps to sew, embroider, and quilt summer-themed placemats. You will create four placemats that bring a fresh Spring look to your table.
The project uses green fabrics in different shades, along with fabric flowers and leaves for decoration. Follow the instructions to cut pieces, sew the quilt top, add embroidery, and finish with quilting.
We used the designs from the Golden Garden Set. The finished size of each placemat is about 12" x 18".

| Embroidery: |
On the light green fabric, use a chalk pencil and quilter's ruler to draw 4 rectangles, each measuring 7" x 12 1/2". Do not cut them out yet.
Using paper printouts or test stitch-outs of the designs, plan the layout of the picture you are going to embroider inside each rectangle. Leave margins of at least 1/2" to 1".
Upload the files from the Golden Garden Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs inside the rectangles. |
| Cut out the rectangles to 17" x 12 1/2". |
| Cutting: |
- Out of the scrap fabrics, cut 2 1/2" squares. You will need 36 squares for each placemat.
- Out of the binding fabric, cut strips for the binding.
|
| Assembly: |
| Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press each seam right after you sew it. |
| Sew the squares into strips, 6 squares per strip. You will need 6 strips for each placemat. |

|
| Sew the strips into a square. |

|
| Sew the square to the left edge of the embroidered part. |

|
| Quilting and Finishing: |
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it, face up.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the embroidered part and echo-quilt the embroidery first. Then move on to the pieced part, which you can quilt in the ditch. |

|
Press with steam. Square up the piece so that all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |

|
| Have fun! |
