This tutorial shows you how to make a seasonal table runner using green scraps, simple piecing, machine embroidery, and quilting. You will create a fresh spring look with daisy blocks set against shades of green fabric. The project is beginner-friendly and perfect for practicing scrap quilting and embroidery skills.
We used the designs from the Art Nouveau Flower Block Set. The finished size of the quilt is about 16 1/2" x 38".
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon;
- about 1 yard of green fabric for the blocks with embroidery and borders;
- small amounts of fabric in all shades of green for the body (use all the green scraps you have);
- fabric for the backing and binding;
- medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle for piecing;
- quilting threads of matching colors;
- #12-#14 quilting needle.
Embroidery:
Upload the files from the Art Nouveau Flower Block Set to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs one by one. |
| Trim the stitch-outs to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares. Remove stabilizer around the embroidery. |
| Cutting: |
From the green scraps:
- Cut 60 squares, each 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".
From the same fabric on which you made the embroidery:
- Cut 2 strips measuring 3" x 34 1/2" (long borders).
- Cut 2 strips measuring 3" x 17 1/2" (short borders).
- You can use the remaining fabric for the binding.
Assembly:
| Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Lay out your embroidered blocks and green squares on a table. Arrange them in the order you want them on the finished item. We'll describe our arrangement below, but feel free to make your own.
The first row features 1 embroidered block and 2 four-patch blocks. First sew the 4-patch blocks, then sew them to each side of the embroidered block. |
For the second row, we used 2 embroidered blocks and one 4-patch block. Sew the 4-patch block, then sew the embroidered blocks to both sides.
| The third row consists of three 4-patch blocks. Sew the blocks, then sew them together. |
The fourth row consists of 2 embroidered blocks and two 2-colored strips made of 2 squares each. Sew the 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares in two pairs. Sew the units in this order:
- 2-color strip,
- embroidered block,
- 2-color strip,
- embroidered block.
| The fifth row consists of six 2 1/2" squares sewn into a strip. |
| The sixth row is pieced like the fourth row. |
| The seventh row is pieced like the fifth row. |
The eighth row consists of 2 embroidered blocks and four 2-color strips. Sew the 8 squares into four 2-color strips. Sew 3 strips together. Sew the units in the following order:
- unit of three 2-color strips,
- embroidered block,
- 2-color strip.
| Row 9 is pieced like the fifth row. |
| Row 10 is made like row 4. |
| Sew all 10 rows together. |
Sew the long 3" x 34 1/2" borders to the long edges of the working piece. Sew the short 3" x 17 1/2" borders to the short edges of the working piece. |
Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted with matching green thread in a free-motion style all over the working piece. |
Press with steam. Square the piece so all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
| Have fun! |
