Green Spring Scrap Quilted Tablerunner with Embroidery
This tutorial shows you how to make a seasonal table runner using green scraps, simple piecing, machine embroidery, and quilting. You will create a fresh spring look with daisy blocks set against shades of green fabric. The project is beginner-friendly and perfect for practicing scrap quilting and embroidery skills.

We used the designs from the Art Nouveau Flower Block Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 16 1/2" x 38".

A quilted tablerunner made of green squares of different shades with blocks with flower embroidery.

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon;
  • about 1 yard of green fabric for the blocks with embroidery and borders;
  • small amounts of fabric in all shades of green for the body (use all the green scraps you have);
  • fabric for the backing and binding;
  • medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
  • batting;
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter;
  • iron;
  • #12 universal needle for piecing;
  • quilting threads of matching colors;
  • #12-#14 quilting needle.
Embroidery:
Upload the files from the Art Nouveau Flower Block Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Trim the stitch-outs to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares. Remove stabilizer around the embroidery.

Cutting:
From the green scraps:
  • Cut 60 squares, each 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".
From the same fabric on which you made the embroidery:
  • Cut 2 strips measuring 3" x 34 1/2" (long borders).
  • Cut 2 strips measuring 3" x 17 1/2" (short borders).
  • You can use the remaining fabric for the binding.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press the seam immediately after you make it.
Lay out your embroidered blocks and green squares on a table. Arrange them in the order you want them on the finished item.
We'll describe our arrangement below, but feel free to make your own.
Green scrap squares and embroidered blocks are layed out and arranged in order to be sewn.

The first row features 1 embroidered block and 2 four-patch blocks.
First sew the 4-patch blocks, then sew them to each side of the embroidered block.

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted with matching green thread in a free-motion style all over the working piece.
Press with steam. Square the piece so all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
