Halloween Mug Rugs with Applique Embroidery
This tutorial shows how to make a set of quilted mug rugs for Halloween. Each one starts with a jack-o-lantern applique embroidered on colored fabric. From there, you quilt it, cut it to any shape you like and bind the edges. These little quilts are quick and fun to make, and they make great gifts for friends.

We used the designs from the Jack-O-Lantern Applique Set.
All files in the set are for a large 5" x 7" hoop.
We made our mug rugs in different sizes and shapes, so the exact measurements are not important. You can make yours smaller or in any other shape you like.

You will need:
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon;
  • a small amount of orange fabric (or any other color you like) for the applique;
  • base fabric for the applique;
  • fabric for binding and/or bias tape for binding;
  • fabric for the backing;
  • medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
  • batting;
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter;
  • iron;
  • #12 universal needle for piecing;
  • quilting threads of matching colors;
  • #12-#14 quilting needle.
Embroidery:
Upload the files from the Jack-O-Lantern Applique Set to the embroidery machine.
Read the instructions on how to embroider these applique designs.
Select the threads. Stabilize the base fabric, hoop it tightly and embroider the designs.
We embroidered them on green, blue and purple fabrics, using orange fabric for the applique.

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing face down on a flat surface, such as a table. Cover it with batting, then spread your embroidered piece over it, face up.

Pin all the layers together.
Echo-quilt around the embroidery first, then free-motion quilt over the rest of the piece.
Press with steam. Now cut the quilt into any shape you like, but try to keep the applique slightly off-center so that a mug placed on the rug does not sit on the embroidery. Finish the raw edges with the binding.
We cut the green quilt into a circle, using a plate as a guide. To finish the raw edges of this shape, you'll need binding cut on the bias. You can also use ready-made bias tape.
This mug rug is 10" in diameter when finished.

The purple mug rug has an irregular four-sided shape. Its opposite sides are different lengths, and its corners have different angles. The finished size of this mug rug is about 10" x 11" at its widest points.

The blue mug rug is a rectangle, with opposite sides of the same length and all corners at 90 degrees. The finished size of this mug rug is 9" x 11".
