This tutorial shows how to add embroidery to a ready-made child's dress. You will learn to make pockets and attach flower designs from the Pansy Bag Panel Set. The set works well for this project and gives the dress a fresh look. Follow the steps to make your own version.
Here is an idea for how to use the embroidery designs from the Pansy Bag Panel Set for something other than a bag.
You will need:
embroidery thread, either polyester or rayon (use our color cards or choose your own colors, but test stitch them first);
a plain dress (it can be a child's dress or an adult blouse);
a piece of fabric matching the color of the dress;
light-weight no-show embroidery stabilizer;
chalk or a graph pencil;
rotary cutter or scissors;
sewing pins;
iron;
#12 universal needle and sewing thread.
Embroidery:
For this project we used a dress made of woven fabric, so it was easy to find matching fabric for the embroidery. If you want to make pockets for a dress made of jersey fabric, we recommend using woven fabric for the embroidery. The embroidery will not pucker, and pockets made of a different fabric add a nice decorative accent.
Upload the files from the Pansy Bag Panel Set to your embroidery machine. Stabilize the fabric with light-weight no-show stabilizer. Hoop tightly. Skip the first color and start embroidering from the second color. Change threads as needed.
Making the Pockets:
After the embroidery is done, cut out the stitch-outs, leaving 1/2" wide margins. Finish the raw edges with a zig-zag stitch or an overlock/serger.
Fold the margins back, leaving 1/8" seam allowance and press.
Top-stitch the upper edges of the pockets. Pin the pockets to the dress.
Top-stitch them in place over the 1/8" seam allowance.
You can add more embroidery, using only the pansies from the design. Mark the position of the embroidery on the garment. Stabilize and hoop tightly. Skip the first two colors and start embroidering from the third color.
