Raven Castle Wall Quilt
This tutorial shows you how to make the Raven Castle Wall Quilt. You will sew the main panel, add the castle and raven embroidery, and finish the piece with an ivy border. The project uses basic quilting and embroidery skills to create a medieval-themed wall hanging.

The quilt construction is simple. It is the embroidery that makes this project special.
We used designs from the Castle Applique, Raven Set, and Ivy Vine Border Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 31 1/2" x 30".

Raven Castle

You will need:
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon;
  • a fat quarter of light-gray fabric for the applique;
  • 1 yard of light-colored fabric (we used sand-colored batik);
  • 1/2 yard of forest green fabric for the border and binding;
  • fabric for the backing;
  • medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
  • batting;
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter;
  • iron;
  • #12 universal needle for piecing;
  • quilting threads of matching colors;
  • #12-#14 quilting needle.
Cutting:
Out of the main fabric, cut:
  • 1 piece measuring 17 1/2" x 18 1/2" for the central part;
  • 2 strips measuring 6 1/2" x 20 1/2" for the borders;
  • 2 strips measuring 6 1/2" x 31 1/2" for the borders.
Out of the green fabric, cut:
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 18 1/2";
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 19 1/2".
Use the remaining green fabric for the binding.
Assembly:
Note: the seam allowance is 1/4". Press each seam immediately after sewing it.
Sew the green strips measuring 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" to the upper and lower edges of the central part.

Then sew the remaining green strips to the left and right edges of the central part.

Sew the 6 1/2" x 20 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece.
Wider sand-colored border strips added above and below the green-framed central panel.

Sew the 6 1/2" x 31 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.

Embroidery:
Upload the file of the Castle Applique to your embroidery machine. Following the instructions for the applique, embroider the design in the center of the quilt.

Using paper print-outs or test stitch-outs of the designs, plan the layout of the embroidery on the quilt top.
Paper print-outs on the quilt top determine the position of the embroidery.

Upload the files from the Raven Set and Ivy Vine Border Set to the machine.
Select your threads and stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs one by one. Start with the ravens in the center, then stitch the ivy on the borders.
Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface, face down. Cover it with batting, then spread your working piece over the batting.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted with matching thread in a free-motion style across the whole piece. Start at the central part and echo-quilt around the embroidery first. Then move on to the borders.

Press with steam. Square up the piece so all corners are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
