This tutorial shows how to make a doily with a rose embroidery design in the center and crocheted borders around the edge. You will learn the steps to embroider the rose pattern on fabric and add the crochet trim to finish the piece. Crochet instructions are included for the borders. The finished doily makes a nice addition to any table or shelf.
This project combines crochet and machine embroidery. We used the round design from the Rose Panel Set.
The finished size of the doily is about 13" in diameter.

You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon;
- light-colored fabric for embroidery (we recommend dense-woven medium-weight fabric such as cotton canvas, medium-weight linen, or medium-weight poly-linen blends);
- medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- polyester craft felt;
- worsted-weight cotton yarn (we used Peaches-and-Cream);
- 3mm - 3.25 mm crochet hook;
- hole puncher for leather (affiliate link);
- temporary fabric adhesive.

Embroidery and Preparing the Center of the Doily:
Upload the file of the round design from the Rose Panel Set into your embroidery machine. Stabilize the fabric with medium-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design. |
Cut out the stitch-out panel leaving about 1/4" margins.
Spray the back of the stitch-out with a temporary adhesive and place it over a piece of polyester felt. Follow the instructions of the adhesive manufacturer to let the embroidery adhere to the felt.
| Cut away the felt following the edge of the stitch-out. |
Punch holes along the edges in the places marked by running stitches.
Crocheting the Borders:
| Prepare yarn and crochet hook. Remove the cut threads from and between the holes. |
