Snowflakes and Stars Table Runner or Wall Quilt

Create a table runner or wall quilt with snowflakes and stars. This project shows how to sew the fabric layers, add machine embroidery for the snowflake designs, and quilt the finished piece. Follow the steps to complete your winter decoration. The blue fabric and white accents bring a simple seasonal look to any room.

We used the designs from the Glowing Snowflake Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 18" x 31".

You will need:

embroidery threads either polyester or rayon according to the color cards;
about 1/2 yard of ice-blue fabric for the stars and binding;
about 1 yard of royal blue fabric as a main fabric of the piece;
fabric for the backing;
medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
batting;
quilter's ruler;
rotary cutter;
iron;
#12 universal needle for piecing;
quilting threads of matching colors;
#12-#14 quilting needle.

Embroidery:

Upload the files from the Glowing Snowflake Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads and stabilize the fabric. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs on the royal blue fabric. All designs fit a small 4" x 4" hoop. If you pre-cut the fabric, be sure you can hoop the pieces safely.

Trim the 2 stitch-outs to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" squares and another 2 to 6 1/2" x 7 1/2" rectangles.

Cutting:

Out of royal blue fabric, cut:

several strips measuring 1 1/2" by the width of the fabric;
1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 27 1/2";
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 13 1/2";
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 33 1/2".

Out of ice-blue fabric, cut:

several strips measuring 1 1/2" by the width of the fabric.

Use the remaining fabric for the binding.

Making the Blocks with Stars:

Note: the seam allowance is 1/4". Press each seam right after you make it.

There are 2 types of blocks: one with 3 stars and one with 4 stars. The 3-star block consists of a unit with 1 star and a unit with 2 stars. The 4-star block consists of 2 units with 2 stars.

To make the unit with 1 star, sub-cut the royal blue 1 1/2" wide strip into the following parts: 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2", 4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
Sub-cut the ice-blue fabric into the following parts: 2 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" and 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
The unit consists of 3 strips. To make assembly easier, lay out the parts as shown in the picture below.

1. Position the ice blue square on the lower end of the 4 1/2" royal blue strip. Draw a diagonal from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Stitch over the diagonal.
2. Cut the excess fabric with seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
3. Open and press the corner.
4. Sew the 3 1/2" royal blue strip to the ice-blue corner.

For the second strip, take the 3 1/2" long strips: 2 royal blue and 1 ice blue.

1. Position a royal blue strip over the ice blue strip as shown in picture 1 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
2. Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".

3. Position another royal blue strip over the ice blue strip as shown in picture 3 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
4. Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".

Open and press.

For the third strip, use the 3 1/2" and 4 1/2" royal blue strips and 1 1/2" ice blue square.

1. Position the ice blue square on the upper end of the 4 1/2" royal blue strip. Draw a diagonal from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Stitch over the diagonal.
2. Cut the excess fabric with seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
3. Open and press the corner.
4. Sew the 3 1/2" royal blue strip to the ice-blue corner.

3 strips are ready:

Sew them together in the order we made them.

For the quilt, you will need 2 units with 1 star.

To make the unit with 2 stars, sub-cut the royal blue 1 1/2" wide strip into the following parts: 4 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2", 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2", 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
Sub-cut the ice-blue fabric into the following parts: 4 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2", and 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
To make assembly easier, lay out the parts as shown in the picture below.

1. Position the ice blue squares on the lower ends of the 2 1/2" and 4 1/2" royal blue strips. Draw a diagonal from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Stitch over the diagonal.
2. Cut the excess fabric with seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
3. Open and press the corner.
4. Sew all parts together as shown below.

For the second strip of the unit use 2 royal blue squares, one 3 1/2" royal blue strip, and 2 3 1/2" ice-blue strips.
1. Position a royal blue square over the upper end of the ice blue strip as shown in picture 1 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
2. Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".

3. Position a royal blue strip over the ice blue strip as shown in picture 3 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
4. Open.

5. Position an ice blue strip over the royal blue strip as shown in picture 5 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
6. Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4". Open.

7. Position the royal blue square on the lower end of the royal blue strip. Draw a diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Stitch over the diagonal.
8. Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
9. Open and press the corner.

For the third strip of the 2-star unit you will need 2 ice blue squares, 1 royal blue square, 4 1/2" and 2 1/2" royal blue strips.

10. Position ice blue squares over the upper ends of the 4 1/2" and 2 1/2" royal blue strips as shown in picture 10 below. Stitch along the diagonal from the upper right corner to the lower left corner.
Cut the excess fabric, leaving a seam allowance a little less than 1/4".
11. Open the corners.
12. Sew all parts of the strip together.

Sew all 3 strips of the unit together in the order you made them.

For the quilt top you will need 6 units with 2 stars.

Assembly of the Quilt Top

Sew the 1-star and 2-stars units into blocks, 2 units per block. You'll get 2 blocks with 3 stars and 2 blocks with 4 stars.

Sew the embroidered and star blocks into 2 vertical strips. Each strip runs as follows: 3-star block, embroidered square, 4-star block, embroidered rectangle.
Flip the strips in opposite directions.

Sew the 1 1/2" x 27 1/2" strip between the quilt strips.
Sew the 3 1/2" x 13 1/2" borders to the short edges of the top.
Sew the 3 1/2" x 33 1/2" borders to the long edges of the top.

Quilting and Finishing

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.

The top of the quilt is prepared for quilting.

We quilted with matching thread in a free-motion style all over the working piece.

Press with steam. Square up the piece so that all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.

You can use the quilt as a table runner or as a wall hanging.
