Quilted Table Runner and Place Mats with Summer Flowers Embroidery

Make a quilted table runner and place mats with summer flowers embroidery. This project shows how to combine sewing, embroidery, and quilting to build a bright set for your table. You will cut the fabric pieces, stitch the flower designs, add the borders, and finish with quilting lines. Follow the steps to complete your own summer table set.

We used the designs from the Sunlit Blossom Set and the Forget-Me-Not Flower Set.
The finished size of the table runner is about 17 1/2" x 40 1/2", and each of the place mats is about 12" x 16 1/2".

You will need:

embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon;
about 2 yards of green fabric for the main parts with embroidery and for the binding;
a small amount of 8 fabrics for the pieced parts and borders;
fabric for the backing;
medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
batting;
quilter's ruler;
rotary cutter;
iron;
#12 universal needle for piecing;
quilting threads of matching colors;
#12-#14 quilting needle.

The Pieced Parts of the Runner and Mats:

To make the central strip of the table runner and the borders of the place mats, cut strips from the 8 fabrics, 1" wide and as long as the width of the fabric. You will need 2 strips of each fabric.

Sew the fabrics together along the long edges with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams in one direction. You will get an 8-color strip 4 1/2" wide.

Subcut the strip into 4 1/2" squares.

Cut each square diagonally alternating the direction of the diagonal cuts as shown:

Make 2 stacks of the triangles, with the triangles in one stack mirror images of the triangles in the second stack.

Sew together pairs of triangles from each stack.

Repeat with the second set of 8 strips.

Cutting:

Out of the green fabric, cut:

2 strips 8 1/2" wide and as long as the width of the fabric, about 40"-41", for the table runner;
4 pieces measuring 13" x 14 1/2" for the place mats.

Use the remaining fabric for the binding.

Assembly:

Note: the seam allowance is 1/4". Press the seam right after you make it.

Cut the short end of one of the strips straight. Subcut the strip into 4 strips 13" long and one strip as long as the 2 green strips (40"-41"), or shorter if your green strips are shorter.

Sew the 13"-long strips to the left edges of the green 13" x 14 1/2" parts for the place mats.

Embroidery:

On the green parts, use the paper printouts or the test stitch-outs of the designs to plan the layout of the picture you are going to embroider.
Upload the selected files from the Sunlit Blossom Set and the Forget-Me-Not Flower Set to the embroidery machine.
Select the threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs one by one.

Quilting and Finishing

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted with matching thread in a free-motion style all over the working pieces. Start from the embroidery, and echo-quilt it. Then proceed to the other parts of the working piece.

Press with steam. Square the pieces, so all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
