Quilted Rustic Place Mats with Sunflower Embroidery
Bring a bright touch of summer to your table with these quilted placemats. This tutorial shows you how to sew, embroider, and quilt a set of rustic placemats with cheerful sunflower designs. The steps are simple and quick, so you can finish a full set in a short time. Perfect for everyday meals or as a handmade gift.

This is a very easy project with handsome results for a summer table.
We used the designs from the Art Nouveau Sunflower Set.
The finished size of the place mats is 12 1/2" x 16".

Linen colored quilted place mats with sunflower embroidery.

You will need:
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon according to the color cards;
  • about 1 yard of linen-colored cotton duck cloth;
  • about 1 yard of patterned green cotton fabric for the backing and binding;
  • medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
  • batting;
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter;
  • iron;
  • #12 universal needle;
  • quilting threads of matching colors;
  • #12-#14 quilting needle.
Embroidery:
Cut the duck cloth into 4 pieces (or as many place mats as you need) measuring 14" x 18" each. Keep in mind that you will need to hoop the pieces, so before cutting, make sure you can hoop them safely.
Upload the files from the Art Nouveau Sunflower Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads and stabilize the fabric. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs off-center, closer to the left edge.
Cutting:
Out of the fabric for the backing and binding, cut:
  • 4 pieces measuring 14" x 18" each for the backing;
  • strips 2 1/2" wide by the width of the fabric for the binding.
Make the binding the way you are used to.
Out of batting, cut:
  • 4 pieces measuring 14" x 18".

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted with matching thread in a meandering style all over the working piece. Start from the embroidery and echo-quilt it first.
Press with steam. Square the piece: all angles should be 90 degrees, and opposite sides should be the same length.
Trim the pieces to 12 1/2" x 16" or the desired size.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
