E-Reader or Tablet Sleeve with Embroidery

This tutorial shows you how to sew a protective sleeve for your E-Reader or tablet and add a beautiful embroidered design to the front. The project uses basic sewing skills and a machine embroidery feature to create a custom accessory that keeps your device safe and stylish. Follow the steps to make one for yourself or as a gift.

We used one of the designs from the Lattice Rose Set.

The finished size of the pouch is about 8"W x 11"H x 1"D. It is made for an E-Reader measuring 7"W x 9 1/4"H x 1/4"D.

You will need:
  • embroidery threads,
  • a piece of fabric for the outer bag - we used low-loft velvet on cotton base;
  • a piece of soft fabric for the lining - we used cotton flannel;
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer.
You will also need:
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter and/or scissors;
  • tailor's chalk pencil;
  • iron;
  • #12-14 universal needle, and sewing thread;
  • a piece of Velcro tape.
Embroidery:
Prepare threads. You can follow our color card or choose colors to your taste. Upload any file from the Lattice Rose Set into your machine.
Stabilize a piece of fabric for the outer bag with light-weight cut-away stabilizer and hoop tightly.
Embroider the design.
A stitch-out of the embroidery design of a rose with lattice in the background.

The embroidery measures 6"W x 9"H. Trim the stitch-out, leaving 1 1/2" wide margins on the sides and bottom, and 3" wide margins on the upper edge. This will be the front panel measuring 9"W x 13 1/2"H.
Cutting:
Out of the fabric for the outer bag, cut:
  • 1 back panel measuring 9" x 13 1/2"
Out of the fabric for the lining, cut:
  • 2 pieces measuring 9" x 12"
The Lining:
Note: Seam allowance is 1/2" unless otherwise recommended. Press every seam immediately after you make it.
Position the lining panels face to face and align all edges. Sew the bottom. Press the seam open.
Fold again with the face inside and align the sides. Sew the sides. Press the seams open.
To make box corners, separate the front and back panels at the corners. Center the side seam with the bottom seam.
Measure 1/2" along the seam from the corner.

Draw a line perpendicular to the seam across the corner and machine-stitch it. Fold the corners to the bottom and hand stitch to the bottom seam allowance.

Turn the lining right side out and set it aside for now.
Outer Bag:
The outer part of the pouch is made in the same way as the lining, with a few small differences.
Position the panels face to face and align all edges.
Sew the bottom, then open and press the seam.
On the upper edge of each panel (front and back), draw a line 1/2" from the edge. Draw another line 1 1/2" from the edge.
Fold the fabric back at the 1/2" line and press. Fold at the 1 1/2" line and press.
Position pieces of Velcro tape along the 1 1/2" line at equal distance from the sides. Topstitch the tape in place.
