Snowman Appliqué  Project in the Hoop

These are intructions on how to embroider the Snowman Appliqué. The design shows 9 colors, but you will need only black and white threads. Different colors are used in the design to mark stops. Besides embroidery threads, you will also need white fabric for the face, red or orange for the nose and two fabrics of your choice for the hat and scarf.
Step One: Hoop the base fabric. We did not use any stabilizers because our base fabric, cotton flannel, is thick enough, but if your base fabric is thin, you might consider using a layer of tear-away stabilizer. Thread the needle with white thread. Start embroidering. The machine will embroider an outline of the face and stop.
Place a piece of white fabric over the outline, and start the machine. It will embroider the outline of the face again, this time over the white fabric.
With a pair of sharp scissors cut away the excess fabric as close to the outline as possible.
Step Two: Continue to use white thread. Return the hoop into the machine. The machine will make an outline for the hat and stop.
Place a piece of fabric (we used light blue) over the hat's outline, and start the machine. After it makes the outline over the hat and stops, cut away the excess fabric.
Step Three: Thread the needle with black thread. Return the hoop into the machine. The machine will make an outline of the nose and stop.
Place a piece of red fabric over the outline of the nose. Start the machine. It will make an outline of the nose and stop.
Cut away the excess fabric as close to the outline as possible.
Step Four: Return the hoop to the machine. The machine will make an outline of the scarf and stop.

Place a piece of  fabric (we used red with white dots) over the outline of the scarf. Start the machine. It will make the scarf outline and stop.

Cut away the excess fabric as close to the outline as possible.

Step Five: Return the hoop into the machine and finish the embroidery. Continue to use black thread.
 The appliqué is ready. Enjoy!
We used the design to embellish the pockets of a Flannel Shawl.
