Leaves and Flowers Cutwork Lace

The Leaves and Flowers Cutwork Set contains 3 designs. The set is available in 2 sizes: for 5" x 7" (130 x 180 mm) and 6" x 8" (140 x 200 mm) hoops. The designs can be embroidered both as inserts and as freestanding motifs. These instructions cover both options.

We used the designs from the set to decorate these charming tea-towels.

You will need fabric, water soluble mesh and embroidery threads. 40-weight embroidery polyester threads are preferred for the project.
Cotton thread is not suitable because the embroidery will be too bulky.
Rayon thread is sensitive to the chemicals in the water-soluble mesh and will not work for the project.

Please note: ALWAYS make a test stitch-out on scrap before you make a stitch-out on the real item.

Cutwork Insert

Step One: Hoop the fabric (we used a tea towel) with water soluble mesh. Start the machine from the second color. It will embroider the outline of the design and stop.

Step Two: Take the hoop from the machine. With a pair of sharp scissors cut away the fabric in the areas shown on the picture - inside the outline and around the leaves and flowers.

Step Three: Return the hoop to the machine and finish embroidering.

Step Two: Place a piece of fabric over the mesh to cover the outline. You can pin the fabric to the mesh outside the embroidery area. Start the machine. It will embroider the same outline and the outlines of leaves and flowers inside.

We used the freestanding stitch-outs to decorate the corners of the tea-towels.

Position the stitch-out on a corner of the towel and pin it in place.

On your sewing machine top-stitch the upper arches of the motif to the towel. Use a straight stitch and place it in the middle of the motif's arch.

Turn the towel wrong side up and cut away the excess fabric as close to the stitch as possible. Take care not to cut through the stitches.

Return to your sewing machine and stitch again along the upper arch of the motif. This time use a zig-zag.
