Smart Phone Lanyard Case

Smart Phones can be too big or cumbersome for inconvenient pockets. In order to solve this dilemma, we made this attractive case that you can wear on a lanyard around your neck.

We used one of the designs from the Geometric Design Set.

The finished size of the case is about 3" wide x 6" high x 3/4" deep. The length of the handle is about 32" (but you can make it longer or shorter depening on your preference).

You will need

  • embroidery thread (rayon or polyester)
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • 2 pieces of fabric, measuring about 10" x 12". You can use felt, leather, leatherette or cotton canvas,
  • a piece of cotton fabric measuring about 4" x 12" for the lining,
  • a strip of leather/leatherette measuring 1" x 34" (or the length of the handle you need),
  • magnetic clasp (optional),
  • quilter's ruler and rotary cutter, or a straight-edge, a fabric marker and sharp scissors.

Emboridery

Embroider the rectangular design from Geometric Design Set You will need 2 stitch-outs. Use light-weight cut-away stabilizer for embroidery and select threads to match the color of your fabric. As my fabric was chocolate brown, I used white, orange, yellow and red threads.

After the embroidery is finished, using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim the stitch-outs leaving 1" margins around 3 sides of the embroidery and about a 4" margin past the upper edge of the embroidery .

Cut away the excess stabilizer around the embroidery. Do not remove the stabilizer under the embroidery.

Sewing:

Place the stitch-outs face to face, align the edges. Stitch the bottom edges together 1/2" from the embroidery. Open the seam. Topstitch the seam allowance 1/4" from the seam.

Fold the upper edge inwards, so that it's 1" protruding over the embroidery. Pin in place. If you are going to use a magnetic clasp, insert it now, then fold the upper side in the same position.

On your sewing machine, finish all upper edges of the case with zig-zag stitch.

Fold the leather 1" wide strip in half lenthwise. Finish the open edge with zig-zag.

Insert the ends of the finished strip in the case, approximately 1" inside. Sew to the sides with zig-zag.

The Lining

Fold the 4 1/2" x 12" piece in half widthwise, face inside. Lightly press the folded line to mark the center of the bottom.

Stitch the sides. Seam allowance is 1/4". Open the seams and press them.

Lanyard iPhone Case

Stitch box corners at the bottom of the lining. For this, separate the sides at the corners. Center the side seam over the center line of the bottom line. Measure 1/2 along the seam from the corner.

Draw a line perpendicular to the seam across the corner and machine stitch-it. Do not trim the seam.

Repeat for the second corner.

Turn the corners to the bottom and press.

Lanyard iPhone Case

Fold the upper edge 1/2" to the wrong side (the right side is on the inside). Press.

Insert the lining into the case. Handstitch the upper edge of the lining to the interior of the case.
