Advent Calendar with Santa's Family Embroidery

This is a great, fast and easy project to make over the week-end. The design used on the central panel is Mr and Mrs Santa. We embroidered the design for a commercial-size hoop, however the smaller sizes will work just as well.

The Advent Calendar Pouches is a freestanding applique. We also used Battenberg Lace Snowflakes and Battenberg Lace Snowflakes for small hoop to embellish the central panel.

The finished size of the wall hanging is about 20" x 22".
For the project we used a piece of bright blue fabric with a golden snowflakes pattern, measuring 18" x 20", 1/4 yard of red fabric for the borders and binding, a piece of batting, and backing.

For the pouches we used about 1/4" of sparkling white fabric, red embroidery thread and red and golden ribbons.

You will also need 25 buttons (we used buttons in the shape of snowflakes) and any Christmas-themed small embellishments you'd like to add.

The Panel:
Out of blue fabric, cut a rectangle measuring 17" x 22",

Out of red fabric cut

  • 4 strips measuring 3" x 22" (for the borders),
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.
Assembly:
Sew 2 red strips to the upper and lower edges of the blue rectangle. Press the seams.
Sew the remaining 2 red strips to the left and right edges of the top. Press the seams.
Embroidery:
Stabilize the blue part with polyester craft felt (you can also use your favorite cut-away stabilizer) and make the embroidery of Mr and Mrs Santa. Cut away the excess felt or stabilizer.
Embroider the Advent Calendar Pouches according to the enclosed instructions.

Embroider the Battenberg Lace Snowflakes and Battenberg Lace Snowflakes for small hoop according to the enclosed instructions.

Quilting:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted around the embroidery and then made stippling all over the quilt.

Decorating:
Now for the most exciting part!
Topstitch the lace snowflakes to the blue part around Mr and Mrs Santa.
Sew the 25 buttons to the red borders.
Attach the pouches with small gifts (usually sweets) to the buttons.
Add any other embellishments you'd like.
The Advent Calendar is ready. Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
