Finished tablerunner with embroidery of birds and blooming hibiscus

You will need :
  • embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon,
  • 1 yard of light-colored fabric for the body of the tablerunner (we chose neutral cream batik with a light floral pattern),
  • scraps of bright yellow and red fabrics - we selected fabrics to match the colors of the flowers,
  • about 1/4 yard of green fabric for the binding and you will need several strips of it for the top,
  • light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
  • fabric for the backing,
  • batting,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • rotary cutter,
  • iron,
  • #12 universal needle,
  • #12-#14 quilting needle
  • quilting threads of matching colors.
Cutting:
Out of the main fabric, cut
  • a piece measuring 12 1/2" x 38 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 40 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 18 1/2" and
  • a strip measuring 1 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric.
    • Subcut this strip into 22 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" each.
Out of yellow fabric, cut 8 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" each.

Out of red fabric, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" each and
  • 8 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2 each.
Out of green fabric, cut
  • 4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" each, and
  • 4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"each.
Use the remaining green fabric for the binding.

Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it.
For the long sides of the first border, sew the cream, green, yellow and red 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strips in the following order:
green strip - (cream - red - cream - yellow) x 4 times - cream - green. Sew 2 such strips.

Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.

Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.

Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.

We quilted in a free-motion style all over the tablerunner.
