Bald Eagle Independence Day Quilt

This simple quilt uses the Bald Eagle design.
The quilt measures about 16" x 18 1/2". It makes a great wall hanging for Independence Day.

For the quilt top we used 2 batiks - pale cream patterned with twigs and brownish-green also with the floral pattern.

You will also need fabric for the backing. Instead of embroidery stabilizer and batting we used polyester craft felt.

You will also need fabric dyes - inks, markers, pencils - whatever you prefer.

Cutting:

Out of light batik cut
a rectangle measuring 10 1/2 x 12 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 10 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 12 1/2";
1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 6" and
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 12".

Out of brownish-green batik cut
4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 10 1/2",
6 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 12 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 6".

Out of the same fabric also cut strips for the binding.

Assembly of the Corner Blocks:

Take a light 1 1/2" x 6" strip and 2 brown 1 1/2" x 6" strips. Sew them together, sandwiching the light strip between the dark ones.
Press the seams to the dark strips.
Cut the piece into 4 strips 1 1/2" wide.

Embroidery:

Spread a piece of polyester craft felt on your table. Spread the quilt top over it.
Hoop both layers and embroider the Bald Eagle in the center.

Quilting and Finishing:

Spread the backing on your table, face down. Cover with the working piece. The felt will work now as batting. Pin all three layers together with 1" pins.

We quilted around the embroidery and all over the quilt in a free-motion style with floral patterns. Remove the pins while working.

Press the work with heavy steam.

Press the work with heavy steam again and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding.

The finishing touch. Color the embroidery using whatever fabric colors you prefer - markers, pencils, inks. Follow the manufacturer's directions.
