Quilted Tablerunner with Easter Chickens Embroidery

This Easter-themed table runner is a very fast and easy project - the piecing is simple and the redwork embroidery is effortless. However the results are very attractive. The tabler runner uses the designs from the Easter Chicken Set.

The finished size of the table runner is about 14" x 40 1/2".

For the top we used 6 cotton fabrics -
  • very light cream or off-white,
  • pale yellow,
  • brighter yellow,
  • pale grass green,
  • bright grass green and
  • patterned yellow-brown fabric for the binding.
You will also need fabric for the backing and a piece of polyester craft felt measuring 15" x 42", which we used both as batting and stabilizer.
Cutting:
Out of the light cream fabric cut a strip measuring 5 1/2" x 31 1/2".

Out of the pale yellow fabric cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 33 1/2".
Note: if you do not have pieces of fabric long enough (we didn't), cut the strips as long as the fabric permits. Then, out of the yellow-brown and bright green fabric, cut squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". Sew the strips together using the yellow-brown and bright green squares as spacers to make one long strip. Then cut it into 2 strips 33 1/2" long.
Out of the brighter yellow fabric cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 35 1/2" (see Note above)
Out of the pale green fabric cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 9 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 37 1/2" (see Note above)
Out of bright green fabric cut
  • 2 strips measuring 2" x 11 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 2" x 41 1/2" (see Note above)
Out of yellow-brown fabric cut 3 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.
Assembly of the Top:
Seam allowance is 1/4", please press a seam to the darker fabric immediately after you made it.
Sew the yellow 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the cream 5 1/2" x 31 1/2" strip.

Embroidery:
Spread the piece of felt on your working table. Spread the top over it. With your hands, smooth the fabric, it will cling to the felt.

Using paper templates, arrange the designs along the central sream strip.
Embroider the designs one by one. We used orange, brown and red embroidery threads.

Quilting and Finishing:
Spread the backing on your table, face down. Cover with the working piece. The felt will work now as batting. Pin all three layers together with 1" pins.

We quilted around the embroidery and all over the quilt in a free-motion style imitating daisies. Remove the pins while working.
When you are finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
