Morning Glory Art Quilt

This small art quilt features the design Cutwork Lace Applique Morning Glory Panel for a commercial size hoop. It's very easy to adjust the quilt for mega and large size designs.

The finished size of our quilt is about 18" x 24". If you make it with the
design for the mega hoop, the finished size will be about 17" x 22". The design for the large hoop makes an even smaller hoop: about 16" x 20". However, you can adjust the size to your taste.

Before starting, please read about how to embroider the Morning Glory design on the page with instructions.
Besides embroidery thread and watersoluble mesh, you will need
  • a piece of base fabric, measuring about 19" x 25" (for the commercial size design) or a fat quarter (about 18" x 22" for the mega and large size designs). Our base fabric is mint green with pale torquoise branches.
  • a fat quarter (18" x 22") of applique fabric for the flowers, borders and binding. We chose torquoise.
  • a piece of applique fabric for the leaves. Out fabric is summer foliage green.
  • a fat quarter (18" x 22") of fabric for the background and binding. We picked lime green.
  • batting and backing,
  • either fusible web, such as Pellon Lite EZ-Steam II, or any fabric adhesive.
Embroidery
Mark the position of the embroidery on the center of your base fabric piece.
Embroider the Morning Glory design as described on the page with instructions.

Sewing the Quilt:
Spread the working piece on your table, face down. Cover the embroidery with the fabric for the backgrond, face down. Pin both layers with sewing pins.

Turn the working piece so the right side faces up. On your sewing machine, using the thread with which you made the embroidery, stitch in a free-motion style along the outer edge of the embroidery to secure the background fabric in place.

Cut away the excess background fabric with a seam allowance of 1/2" from the edge of the embroidery.

Out of the fabric you used for the flower applique, cut 4 wavy strips measuring abour 1/2" x 14".

Use these strips to make a frame around the embroidery, about 1 1/2" from its edges. Adhere the strips in place.

Quilting and Finishing:
Spread the backing on your table, face down. Cover the backing with batting. Cover with the working piece. Pin all three layers together with 1" pins.

We quilted around the embroidery and all over the quilt in a free-motion style. Remove the pins while quilting.
Press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length. Finish the raw edges with binding. For the binding you can use either the background fabric, or applique fabric.
We made the binding out of both the flower applique and backround fabrics.
We cut the turquoise fabric into 5" long strips and the lime green fabric into 8" long strips.

Sew the strips together lengthwise. Subcut into strips 2 1/2" wide and sew them again into a long binding strip.
Your quilt is ready! Enjoy!

Enjoy!
