Geranium with Shadow Wall Quilt

For this quilt, we used the Geranium Set. The set consists of two patterns: a full-color photo-stitch design, and a one-color designs. We used the photo-stitch design for the mega hoop and the one-color design for the large hoop (to create a "shadow").

The finished size of the wall hanging is about 18" x 20".

You will need

  • embroidery threads,
  • light- to medium-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • three fabrics (we used batiks): light-colored for the central part with embroidery, very light(contrasting with the first one) for the border and dark for the border, binding and loops,
  • backing and bating.

Cutting:

Out of light batik for the central part, cut

  • 1 rectangle measuring 11 1/2" x 13 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 12 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1 x 15 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 14 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 17 1/2"
Out of the very light batik, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 11 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 14 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 13 1/2",
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 16 1/2".

Out of batik for the borders, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 2" x 15 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 2" x 20 1/2".
Cut the rest of this fabric into 3 strips measuring 2 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding and the loops.

Assembly of the Top:

Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press seams immediately after you make them.

Sew very light strips measuring 1" x 11 1/2" to the upper and lower edges of the central part. Then sew the 1" x 14 1/2" strips to the left and right edges.

Embroidery:

Hoop the central part of the quilt top. First embroider the color design, slightly to the left of the center. Either in your software on the computer or in your machine, flip the one-color design to get its mirror image.
With the help of a print-out of the one-color design determine the position of the "shadow".

Then embroider the one-color design.

Quilting and Finishing:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted with a meandering pattern around the embroidery and in a freemotion style on the borders.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Use the remaining binding strip to make 4 loops. Sew them to the back of the wall hanging.

Your wall quilt is done. Enjoy!
