Jam Jar Quilted Placemats

For these quick, cute placemats, we used one-color designs from the Jam Jar Set for a large (5" x 7") hoop.

The finished size of each placemat is about 15 1/2" x 27".

You will need

  • embroidery thread (either polyester or rayon); choose any color you like
  • medium-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • we used marble reen, brick red and tan patterned fabrics and white and yellow solid fabrics; feel free to choose your own colors,
  • backing and batting,

Cutting:

For one placemat: out of marble green fabric, cut

  • 3 rectangles measuring 7" x 8",
Out of the white fabric, cut
  • 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 7",
  • 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 9",
  • 1 strip measuring 3" x 28".

Out of yellow fabric, cut
  • 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 8 " and
  • 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 10".
Out of red-brick fabric cut
  • 1 strip measuring 2 1/2" x 10" and
  • 1 strip measuring 3" x 28".
Out of tan fabric cut 3 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric (42"-44") for the binding.

Embroidery:

Upload the files from the Jam Jar Set into your machine and embroider them on the blocks. Pick a thread color that contrasts with your fabric.

Quilting and Finishing:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted with a meandering pattern all over the mats.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Your placemat is done. Enjoy!
