Tropical Vacation Table Runner or Wall Hanging
For this vacation themed table runner we used the designs from the Sea Shell and Tropical Fish Set.

All designs are for the small hoop (4"x 4").

The finished size of the tablerunner is about 16" x 40".

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon, the choice of colors is yours,
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • 1/2 yard of white cotton fabric
  • 1/2 yard of blue cotton fabric (preferably with an ocean pattern),
  • fabric for the backing and binding,
  • batting,
  • quilter's ruler and rotary cutter or scissors and graphic pencil,
  • iron,
  • printer is recommended, but not necessary.
Out of white fabric, cut
  • 5 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 17 1/2" and
  • 3 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 18".
Out of blue fabric, cut 3 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 18".
Stack 2 white strips and 2 blue strips measuring 4 1/2" x 18". Place all pieces face up, align all edges.

Place the ruler on a diagonal from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Cut to make 4 white and 4 blue triangles.
Stack the remaining white strips and blue strips measuring 4 1/2" x 18". Place all pieces face up, align all edges.

Place the ruler on a diagonal from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Cut to get 2 white and 2 blue triangles

We did embroidery on the white sections of the top. Make print-outs of the designs and position them on the white sections as you like. If you do not have a printer, make rectangles of the same dimentions as the designs, mark them with the number of the fish/shell design. Arrange them on the quilt top.

After you're satisfied with the composition, embroider the designs one by one. Use any colors you like.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the table runner.

Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding.
You can use this piece as either a table runner or a wall hanging.

Happy Stitching! Have fun!
