Four Seasons Quilted Tablerunner
For this tablerunner, we used designs from the Colors of the Seasons Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 14" x 67".

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either according to the color cards, or of your choice,
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • about 1 yard of light color for the embroidery and background (white, pale cream, or linen),
  • scraps of pale blue, bright pink, light green, dark green, golden yellow, brown and bright blue (of each of these fabrics you'll need 2 strips measuring 1" x 8" and 2 strips measuring 1" x 9"),
  • fabric for the backing and binding,
  • batting,
  • #12 universal sewing and quilting needles,
  • quilting threads of matching colors,
  • rotary cutter,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • iron.
Embroidery:
We did the embroidery first. Upload the files from the Colors of the Seasons Set into the machine. Prepare the fabric, stabilize it with light-weight cut-away stabilizer.

We made 7 stitch-outs, embroidering the winter design twice. The first stitch-out was lighter blue and the second, darker blue.

All other designs were embroidered one time each.

Press the stitch-outs, cut away the excess stabilizer. Trim the stitch-outs to 8" x 8" blocks.
Cutting:
Out of 7 colored fabrics each, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 8" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 9".

Out of fabric for the background, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 3" x 60 1/2" (most probably you'll need to cut more strips and sew 2 strips to get ones 63" long) and
  • 2 strips measuring 3" x 15".
Assembly of the Top:
Note: Seam allowance is 1/4", press a seam immediately after you made it.
Sort the colored strips accordingly:
  • light blue for the first (light blue) winter block,
  • pink for the spring block,
  • light green for the early summer block,
  • dark green for the late summer block,
  • golden yellow for early autumn,
  • dark brown for late autumn,
  • dark blue for the second winter block.
Sew the 1" x 8" strips to the upper and lower edges of each block.
Sew the 1" x 9" to the left and right edges of each block.

Now sew the blocks together in a row. Please note that you can arrange the stitch-outs horizontally (as on our tablerunner), or vertically (to get a tall narrow quilt). This depends on how you're going to use the quilt.

Sew the long 3" x 60 1/2" strips to the long edges of the working piece.
Sew the short 3" x 15" strips to the short edges of the working piece.

Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted in a free motion style.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
