This small, Ocean-themed wall quilt features the designs Blue Whale Mosaic and Waves and Splashes Set. We used the smallest size of the Blue Whale design.

The finished size of the wall quilt is about 20" x 20".
Finished quilt with whale embroidery.

You will need :
  • polyester or rayon embroidery threads, according to our color cards,
  • 1 fat quarter of light blue fabric for the central part; you can use a solid, but a batik is preferable,
  • 1 or 2 sea themed patterned fabrics - for the borders and binding,
  • light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
  • fabric for the backing,
  • batting,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • rotary cutter,
  • iron,
  • #12 universal needle,
  • #12-#14 quilting needle
  • fabric pencils, markers or ink (optional).
Cutting:
Out of the fabric for the central part, cut a piece measuring 16 1/2" x 16 1/2",
Out of fabric for the borders, cut
  • 1 strip measuring 4 1/2" x 16 1/2", and
  • 1 strip measuring 4 1/2" x 20 1/2"
Use the remaining patterned fabric for the binding.

Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it.
Sew the first border strip, 4 1/2" x 16 1/2" to the lower edge of the central part.

Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful.

Stabilize the chosen areas. Hoop fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one. Start with the whale, then embroider the splashes.
Stitch-out of the whale design.

Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.

We quilted in a free-motion style - wavy lines imitating waves - all over the quilt.

Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding.
If you use solid colored fabric for the central part, add some color between the "waves" with fabric pencils, markers or ink.
Have fun!
