Geometric Circles Bag
This cool-looking bag features embroidery from the Geometric Circles Set.

The finished size of the bag is about 16"(wide) x 11"(high) x 2" (deep).

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon - the choice of colors is completely up to you,
  • tan canvas/duck cloth for the central strip with embroidery,
  • Meteorite Cork fabric (1 yard cut)
  • Medium-weight iron-on cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
  • fabric for the lining,
  • light-weight iron-on sewing interfacing,
  • magnetic closure for the bags, or a 1" square of self-adhesive Velcro tape,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • rotary cutter, or scissors and graphic pencil,
  • iron,
  • #12 and #14 universal needles,
  • sewing thread of matching color,
  • chalk pencil,
  • fabric glue (optional).

Embroidery:
Upload the files from the Geometric Circles Set into the machine. Select thread.
Stabilize the canvas fabric with iron-on cut-away stabilizer.

Embroider the designs one by one along one line and keepimg 1/4" distance between them. Embroider 2 strips with 3 designs per strip.
After the embroidery is done, press it. Trim the stitch-outs to 2 strips, each measuring 6" x 18".

Cutting:
Out of cork fabric, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 2" x 36",
  • 2 strips measurimg 4 1/2" x 18",
  • 2 strips measuring 5 1/2" x 18".
Out of fabric for the lining, cut
  • 2 panels measuring 12 1/2" x 18",
  • 2 pieces measuring 8" x 12" (for pockets).
Out of sewing interfacing, cut
  • 2 strips measuing 3/4" x 36",
  • 2 panels measuring 12 1/2" x 18".
Assembly:
Handles:
Fold the 2" x 36" strips lengthwise in half, back to back, and press. Position the interfacing 3/4" x 36" strips between the folded sides and press again.

Top-stitch along the long edges, 1/8" seam allowance.

Working with one handle and one stitch-out at a time, pin each end of the handle to the top edge of the stitch-out, 4 1/2" from each end of the embroidered strip.

Topstitch the handles to the panels, seam allowance about 1/4".

Assembly of the Panels:
Cover the stitch-out with the cork 4 1/2" x 18" strip. Align the upper and side edges.
Cover the stitch-outs with handles with the cork strip.

Topstitch, seam allowance 1/2".
Topstitch with seam allowance 1/2".

Open and press the seam allowance towards the embroidered strip.
Press seam allowance towards embroidered strip. Voew from the wrong side.

Turn front up and topstitch through the seam allowance, 1/4" from the embroidered fabric edge.

Measure 1 1/2" from the embroidery edge along the handles and mark with a chalk pencil.
Mark with chalk pencil 1 1/2" from the edge of the embroidery along the handle.
Topstitch the handles to the panels within the 1 1/2" marks.

Fold the upper edge of both panels 1 1/2" back and press. Unfold.
Position the 5 1/2" x 18" cork strip along the lower edge of the embroidered strip. Align the lower and side edges.
Position the 5 1/2" x 18" cork strip along the lower edge of the stitch-out.

Stitch together, seam allowance 1/2".
Fold the seam allowance towards the embroidered strip.
Turn the right side facing and topstitch through seam allowance, 1/4" from the embroidered fabric edge.

Sewing the Bag:
Position both panels face to face, align all edges. Sew the bottom edge, seam allowance 1/2".
Open the seam and topstitch 1/4" on both sides of it.

Fold the panels face to face again, align the edges. Sew the sides together, seam allowance 1/2". Open and press the seams.

Shaping the Bottom:
To make box corners, separate the front and back sides at the corners. Center the seam on the side with the bottom seam.
Center the seam on the side with the bottom seam.

Measure 1" along the seam from the corner.
Measure 1" along the seam from the corner.

Draw a line perpendicular to the seam across the corner and machine-stitch it several times.

Repeat for the other corner.
Fold the upper edge back along the pressed line.
Tuck the handles inside, out of the way and topstitch 1/4" along the upper edge.
Turn the bag right side out.

Attach the magnetic closure to the folded upper edge from the inside, between the handles and as close to the upper edge as possible.
Lining:
Stabilize the lining panels with iron-on sewing interfacing.

Sew both lining panels along the bottom, seam allowance 1/2". Open and press the seam. Topstitch 1/4" on each side.
Sew both lining panels along the bottom, press the seam open.

To make pockets, fold the pocket piece (8" x 12") widthwise, face inwards. Stitch along 2 sides. Seam allowance for the pocket is 1/4".

Turn right side out. Press. Tuck the raw edges 1/2" inside, press and topstitch.

Repeat for the second pocket.

Position the pocket on one of the lining panels, about 3" from the upper edge and an equal distance from the sides. Pin.

Topstitch along the side and bottom edges in place.
Topstitch the pocket in place.

Fold the lining, face inwards. Align the upper and side edges.
Stitch the sides, seam allowance just under 1/2".
Make box corners in the same way as described for the outer bag.
Finishing:
Insert the lining into the bag. Align the side edges. Lift the folded upper edge and tuck the lining under it up to the stitches.
Tuck the lining under the upper folded edge of the bag.

Pin in place.
Pin the lining in place.

Working from inside, topstitch along the raw edge of the folded upper edge, seam allowance 1/8".
Topstitch along the raw edge of the folded side.

You are done!
