Small Decorative Cushions with Embroidery
For these small, cute cushions, we used designs from the Cute Unicorn Set, Flower Silhouette Set, Monogram Alphabet, and Vine Border Set.

The finished size of the cushions is about 8" x 8" and 10" x 8".

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon - either follow our color cards, or choose colors to your taste,
  • light colored fabric for the front of the cushion,
  • bright colored fabric for the back and ruffles,
  • light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
  • polyester stuffing,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • rotary cutter, and/or scissors,
  • iron,
  • #12 universal needle, sewing threads,
Embroidery:
For the Unicorn cushion we chose the designs from the Cute Unicorn Set, and Flower Silhouette Set.

For the cushion with a child's monogram we used the designs drom the Monogram Alphabet, and Vine Border Set
Choose the designs, upload them into the embroidery machine. Select threads.

Stabilize the light-colored fabric with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Embroidery of a unicorn and flower.

Trim the unicorn embroidery to 8 1/2" x 10 1/2". Do not remove the stabilizer.
Embroidery of a letter S in a frame.

Trim the monogram embroidery to 8 1/2" x 8 1/2". Do not remove the stabilizer.
Cutting:
Out of fabric for the back panel, cut a 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangle for the unicorn cushion, and 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" for the monogram cushion.

Out of the fabric for the ruffles, cut strips 2 1/2" wide. For the unicorn cushion you will need a strip 54" long. For the monogram cushion - 48" long.
Assembly:
Fold the ruffle strip in half lengthwise, back side to back side and press.

Unfold. Stitch together the short ends, right sides together, to form a loop. Seam allowance 1/4", press the seam open.
Fold the strip into quarters and mark each fold with pins.
Stitch 2 lines of gathering stitches (4-5mm long) on each quarter of the loop, between the pins.
Divide each side of the cushion panel in half and mark with a pin. You can use either the front or back panel of the cushion. Position it on the table right side facing.

Match the pins on each side with the pins on the ruffle loop.

Pull up gathering threads until the ruffle fits each side of the cushion panel. Distribute the ruffles evenly.
Ruffle pinned to the pillow panel.

Pin the ruffle to the panel, rounding the corners.
Ruffles pinned to the front panel of the monogram pillow.

Stitch the ruffle to the panel.
Ruffle stitched to the pillow panel.

Cover the working piece with another panel., face to face. Pin together.
Front panel with embroidery over the ruffled part.

Stitch the panels together, leaving a 3" opening on one side. Seam allowance 3/8".
Notch the curves.
Stitch the panels together, leaving 3" opening on one side.

Turn the cushion right side out. Insert the stuffing. Stitch the opening closed by hand.
Finished unicorn pillow. Close-up.
