Caroling Angels Wall Quilt
Welcome to the Caroling Angels Wall Quilt tutorial, where you will learn to sew, quilt, and add machine embroidery to create a festive Christmas-themed wall quilt. This guide walks you through each step, from assembling the quilt top to finishing with embroidered angel designs and musical notes. Perfect for holiday decor, this project offers a fun way to combine basic sewing skills with embroidery techniques.

For this small wall quilt we used the designs from the Singing Angel Set and Christmas Tunes Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 23" x 26".

A small wall quilt with embroidery of Caroling angels and music on a dark blue background with light blue and yellow borders.

You will need:
  • embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon, in colors of your choice (make sure the embroidery colors match your chosen fabrics);
  • 1/2 yard of royal blue fabric for the central part with embroidery and fourth border;
  • small amounts of bright blue, golden yellow, and ice blue fabrics matching the embroidery colors for the borders and binding;
  • fabric for the backing;
  • medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
  • batting;
  • quilter's ruler;
  • rotary cutter;
  • iron;
  • #12 universal needle for piecing;
  • quilting threads in matching colors;
  • #12-#14 quilting needle;
  • hot-fix crystals or small snowflakes (optional).
Cutting:
Out of the royal blue fabric, cut:
  • 1 piece measuring 16 1/2" x 19 1/2"
  • 4 strips measuring 2" x 24 1/2"
Out of the bright blue fabric, cut:
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 18 1/2"
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 19 1/2"
Use the remaining fabric for the binding.
Out of the golden yellow fabric, cut:
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 19 1/2"
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 21 1/2"
Out of the ice blue fabric, cut:
  • 4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 21 1/2"
Assembly:
Note: Seam allowance is 1/4". Press the seam immediately after you make it.
Sew the 2 bright blue 1 1/2" x 19 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
Then sew the remaining bright blue 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.

Embroidery
Mark the position of the embroidery designs. If you have a printer and embroidery software, printouts of the designs can be very helpful. Test stitch-outs can also be used for this purpose.

If you do not have a printer and do not wish to make test stitch-outs (though we recommend doing so), you can cut out rectangles the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the embroidery placement.
Paper printouts of the designs show the position of the embroidery on the central part of the quilt.
Upload the files of the Singing Angel Set and Christmas Tunes Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads.
Stabilize the central part.
Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Remove the excess stabilizer.
Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part and echo-quilt the embroidery first, then proceed to the borders. Change threads as needed.
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece. All angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
You can further embellish the quilt's surface with hot-fix crystals or small snowflake buttons.
