Create a festive Golden Retriever wall quilt with this fun tutorial, perfect for adding holiday cheer to your home. This guide walks you through sewing the quilt, using machine embroidery to add a Golden Retriever in a Santa hat, and finishing with quilting. Follow the steps to craft a charming Christmas decoration for your wall.

This is a simple project that definitely brings smiles and warmth to any golden retriever owner.

For this small quilt we used the design of the Golden Retriever in a Santa's Hat. The finished size of the quilt is about 18" x 19 1/2".

Christmas-themed wall quilt with the embroidery of a golden retriever in a Santa's hat in the center and traditional green-and red borders.

You will need:

  • Embroidery threads (polyester or rayon) according to our color card
  • A fat quarter of white fabric for the embroidery
  • 1/2 yard of solid forest green fabric for the first border and binding
  • 1/2 yard of red-green Christmas-themed patterned fabric (we used red-and-green tartan)
  • Fabric for the backing
  • Medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer
  • Batting
  • Quilter's ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Iron
  • #12 universal needle for piecing
  • Quilting threads in matching colors and invisible thread for quilting through embroidery
  • #14 quilting needle
  • Red-and-green buttons, snowflake buttons, or any other additional embellishments (optional)
Embroidery:
Upload the Golden Retriever in a Santa's Hat design to your embroidery machine.
Select the appropriate thread colors.
Stabilize the piece of white fabric with cut-away stabilizer.
Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design.
Trim away excess stabilizer around the embroidery.

Trim the stitch-out to 12" wide and 13 1/2" high.
Cutting:

From green fabric:

  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 12" for the first border
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 14 1/2" for the first border
  • Binding strips from the remaining green fabric

From patterned fabric:

  • 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 13"
  • 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 20 1/2"
Assembly:
Note: Use a 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise recommended. Press each seam immediately after sewing.
Sew the 1" x 12" green strips to the upper and lower edges of the embroidered center piece.
Then sew the 1" x 14 1/2" green strips to the left and right edges of the center piece.

Quilting and Finishing
Place the backing face down on a flat surface. Layer the batting on top, then add your quilt top.
Pin all layers together.
We used free-motion quilting throughout. Start in the center and quilt through the embroidery with invisible thread, following the outlines of the dog's fur, eyes, and muzzle. Keep the quilting light. You just want to secure the embroidery so it doesn't puff up.
Then quilt the borders, changing thread colors as needed.
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece so all angles are 90 degrees and opposite sides are the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
Add buttons for more dramatic effect.

Have fun!
