This tutorial guides you through creating a wall quilt with a Golden Retriever and fall leaves. You will learn to sew the quilt top, add quilting stitches, and use machine embroidery for details. Follow the steps to make your own seasonal decoration.
For this small quilt we used the designs of the Golden Retriever with a Maple Leaf and Autumn Leaf Set. The finished size of the quilt is about 21" x 22".

You will need :

- a fat quarter of light-colored fabric for the central part;
- small amount of burnt orange fabric for the first border and binding;
- about 1/2 yard of multi-colored fabric in autumn foliage colors for the second border;
- fabric for the backing;
- medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle for piecing;
- quilting threads of matching colors and invisible thread for quilting though embroidery;
- fabric paints;
- #12-#14 quilting needle;
- embroidery software and printer (optional).
|
Cutting:
|
Out of the light-colored fabric, cut:
- 1 piece measuring 13 1/2" x 14 1/2" for the central part.
|
Out of the orange fabric, cut:
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 13 1/2"
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 16 1/2"
- Use the remaining fabric for the binding.
|
Out of multi-colored fabric, cut:
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 15 1/2"
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 22 1/2"
|
Assembly:
|
| Note: Seam allowance is 1/4" unless otherwise recommended. Press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 2 orange 1 1/2" x 13 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part. Then sew the remaining orange 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the central part.

|
| Sew the 3 1/2" x 15 1/2" multi-colored strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. |
|
Sew the remaining multi-colored 3 1/2" x 22 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.

| Embroidery |
Mark the position of the embroidery designs. If you have a printer and embroidery software, printouts of the designs can be very helpful. Test stitch-outs can also be used for this purpose.
If you do not have a printer and do not wish to make test stitch-outs (though we recommend doing so), you can cut out rectangles the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the embroidery placement. |
|
Upload the files of the Golden Retriever with a Maple Leaf and Autumn Leaf Set to the embroidery machine. Prepare threads. Stabilize the central part. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs in the center one by one. Remove the excess stabilizer.

Quilting and Finishing
|
Place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
|
|
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the embroidery first. Then proceed to the borders. Change quilting threads to match the fabrics. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece. All angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
|
| You are basically done. To add more interest to the quilt, add some color. There is a wide choice of coloring media for fabrics. The most affordable and simple to use here are fabric markers. |
|
| We used a yellow and an orange fabric markers to color the leaves. Leave the dog as it is. |

| Have fun! |
