These Valentine mug rugs are a quick and easy sewing project that combines simple piecing, light quilting, and machine embroidery. You can make a set of these practical coasters in an afternoon, and they make a thoughtful gift for friends or family. The bold hearts and modern fabrics give them a fresh look perfect for February or any time you want to add a touch of love to your coffee table.
We used the designs from the Heart Set, all designs are for the small 4" x 4" hoop. The finished size of the rugs varies: about 9" x 9 1/2", 7 1/2" x 13", and 12 1/2" x 10" x 5". You can adjust the shape and size to your taste and needs.

Embroidery:
Upload the selected files from the Heart Set to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Stabilize the fabric. Hoop tightly and embroider the designs on your fabrics. |
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working pieces over it. Pin all layers together. We quilted with matching thread in parallel lines all over 2 of the working pieces. The third, almost square one we quilted in a grid. Always start from the embroidery, and echo-quilt it first. Then proceed to the other parts.
Press with steam. Trim your quilted stitch-outs in any shape you like and the fabric permits.
