This tutorial shows you how to create a wall quilt featuring a central embroidered willow tree motif. You will learn the steps to piece the borders, applique and embroider the tree design, and finish the quilt with stitching and binding. The finished quilt measures about 30 inches square and makes a fresh, nature-inspired piece for your home. We used the design of Willow. The finished size of the quilt is about 20" x 20".

Embroidery:

Stabilize and hoop the light-colored fabric for the central part tightly. Upload the file of Willow to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Embroider the design in the center. |
Trim the stitch-out to 11 1/2" x 11 1/2" square, leaving equal margins around the embroidery.

Out of brown fabric for the first border:

Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the embroidery first. Then proceed to the area around. Change threads to match the colors of the fabrics.
|
 |
Press with steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
 |
| Have fun! |
