Table Mats and Table Toppers with Apple Appliqué

These quick and easy-to-make place mats and table toppers are the perfect decoration for your home in late summer and early autumn. They also sell very well at craft bazaars and are good for fundraising. We used designs from the Apple Appliqué Set.
Table Mats
The table mats are 14" x 20". For four table mats you will need 1 1/2 yards of solid color fabric for the background and backing, 1/2 yard of apple-themed fabric and batting, and scraps of fabrics for applique. All seam allowances are 1/4".
The first table mat is extremely simple. Out of solid color fabric cut a rectangle measuring 14" x 16", out of apple themed fabric cut a rectangle measuring 14" x 4 1/2". Stitch the pieces together. Press. Make the applique in the lower left corner. Press.
Place the piece over backing and batting. Pin. Quilt. We used free-motion meandering. You can make a lattice, or quilt in another way. This small piece is ideal to practice your quilting skills.
After quilting, press, square and finish the raw edges with binding. We cut the binding out of the same apple-themed fabric as the right panel of the mat.
For the second type of table mat, cut a rectangle measuring 14" x 15 1/2" out of solid color fabric and 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 14" out of apple-themed fabric.
Attach the colored strips to the rectangle, as shown on the photo. Press. Make appliqué. Press.
Pin to backing and batting and quilt all three layers. Quilt. Square and finish the raw edges with binding.
Table Topper I

The finished size of this table topper is 29" x 29". A 14 1/2" x 14 1/2" central square out of marble green fabric is surrounded by 7" wide border out of apple-themed fabric.
Cut a 15" x 15" square for the central piece. For borders, cut 2 strips measuring 7" x 15" and 2 strips measuring 7" x 29". Assemble. Press. Then make the applique on the central part. Press. Pin to backing and batting and quilt all three layers. Quilt. Square and finish the raw edges with binding.
Table Topper II
The finished size of this table topper is 38" x 38". The central 16" x 16" tan square with applique is surrounded by borders. The first is a 1" wide dark green border. The second is a 10" wide border with mitered corners, made out of apple-themed border fabric. If you do not have border print fabric, it's also possible to add applique to the borders.
Cut a 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" square for the central piece. Out of green fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" and 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 18 1/2". For the outer border with mitered corners, cut 4 strips 10 1/2" wide and 49" long.
Assemble. Press. Then make the applique on the central part. Press. Pin with backing and batting and quilt all three layers. Quilt. Square and finish the raw edges with binding.
Table Topper III
The finished size of this table topper is 29" x 29". The central part is an oversized nine patch block made out of 5" squares. It's surrounded by a 1" wide red border and a 6" wide apple themed border.
Out of fabric for the background -- we used tan colored fabric -- cut 5 squares measuring 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Out of apple-themed fabric, cut 4 squares measuring 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Out of red fabric cut 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 15 1/2" and 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 17 1/2". Out of apple-themed fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 6 1/4" x 17 1/2" and 2 strips measuring 6 1/4" x 29".
Assemble the squares into a nine patch:
Add borders. Press. Make applique in the solid squares of the 9-patch block. Press. Pin with backing and batting and quilt all three layers. Quilt. Square and finish the raw edges with binding.
We hope that you liked our idea and will come up with many of your own.
