Country-Style Spring Table Runner and Place Mats with Chicken Embroidery

This quilted table set features lovely bluework embroidery and a charming rustic style. We chose a blue-and-white color scheme to better match our interior decor, but you can easily change colors to match your wishes and the season.
The finished size of the table runner is about 16" x 32". The finished size of the mats is about 13" x 19".
The embroidery designs used are from the Bluework Chicken Set.

We used scraps of different blue fabrics, 1 fat quarter of a cornflower blue fabric and 1/2 yard of white fabric. You will also need low loft batting or white polyester felt, and fabric for backing and binding.

Cut:
out of different blue fabrics cut 32 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 5";
out of white fabric cut one 9" x 32 1/2" rectangle
Assembly and Embroidery:
All seam allowances are 1/4".
Stitch together the 16 blue strips into a long strip, as shown below. It should measure 32 1/2" x 5". Press the seams in one direction.
Repeat with the other 16 blue strips.
Place the long blue strip on a cutting table and cut it lengthwise in half to get two 2 1/2" x 32 1/2" strips.
Flip one of the new strips so that its right side becomes its left. Stitch the strips together. Repeat for the second strip. You will get two new strips with a checkered pattern.
Sew them to the white rectangle.
Hoop with any cut-away stabilizer and embroider the designs from the Bluework Chicken Set for small hoop, one by one. Press the working piece.
On your working table, spread the backing face down, cover it with batting and place the embroidered piece on top. Pin all three layers together. Quilt around the embroidery and all over the white field.

Using a decorative stitch from your sewing machine, stitch along all blue squares with different stitches.

When finished, press with steam, square the work and finish with binding.

Place Mats:
For the place mats we used the same embroidery designs, but for the large hoop.
For each place mat, cut:
out of the blue fat quarter, one strip measuring 5" x 13";
out of white fabric, one rectangle measuring 10 1/2" x 12 1/2";
out of scraps of different blue fabrics, twelve 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Stitch the twelve blue squares together into two strips measuring 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" (6 squares in each strip; see diagram below). Press the seams.
Attach one of the strips to the bottom of the white rectangle.
Attach the remaining strip to the left side of the working piece.
Attach the blue strip to the right side.
Hoop with any cut-away stabilizer and embroider a design from the Bluework Chicken Set for the large hoop. Press the working piece.
On your working table, spread the backing base down, cover it with batting and place the embroidered piece over them. Pin all three layers together. Quilt around the embroidery and all over the white field.

Using decorative stitches from your sewing machine, stitch along all blue squares with different stitches.

When finished, press with steam, square the work and finish with binding.

The place mats are ready. Enjoy!
To complete this ensemble, you might want to add the Assisi Egg Caps and Napkin Rings.
We hope that you liked our idea and will come up with many of your own.
