Medieval Flowers Wall Hanging

This charming quilted wall hanging uses the Medieval Flower Quilt Block Set for the Small hoop. It can add a stylish, historical touch to your living room.
The finished size of this wall quilt is about 30" x 38".
We used about 1/2 yard of dark chocolate batik and 1/2 yard of light sand batik. You'll also need a piece of batting and backing.
Cutting:
All measurements are based on 40" wide fabric and 1/4" seam allowance.

Out of dark chocolate batik, cut a strip 6 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. Subcut the strip into 6 squares measuring 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Cut 6 strips 1 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. Subcut the strips into 12 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" and 12 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 8 1/2".
For the first border, cut 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" and 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 34 1/2".

Out of light sand batik, cut a strip measuring 6 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. Subcut the strips into 6 squares measuring 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Cut 4 strips 1 1/ 2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. Subcut the strips into 24 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 6 1/2".
For the border, cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" and 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 38 1/2".

For the binding, cut 3 strips 2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric.

Sew the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" sand strips to the upper and lower edges of the dark chocolate squares. Then, sew the 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" sand strips to the left and right sides of the dark chocolate squares.
Sew the 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" chocolate strips to the upper and lower sides of the sand squares. Then, sew the 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" chocolate strips to the left and right sides of the sand squares.
Sew each 3 blocks into a row, alternating the blocks. You should get 2 rows that start with a light block and 2 rows that start with a dark block.
Assemble the top, alternating the rows.
Attach the first border. First attach the 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" chocolate strips to the top and bottom of the top. Then attach the 1 1/2" x 34 1/2" chocolate strips to the left and right sides of the top.
Attach the second border. First attach the 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" sand strips to the top and bottom sides of the top. Then attach the 2 1/2" x 38 1/2" to the left and right sides.
Embroidery:
Choose threads for embroidery. We embroidered the sand squares with light brown and dark chocolate threads, while the chocolate squares were embroidered with pale pink and bright pink threads. We recommend to make several stich-outs of the designs to pick the best color combination.
Stabilize the squares with low-loft batting or polyester craft felt. Baste the quilt top to the felt in the ditch along the margins of the squares. After the embroidery is finished, rip the baste and cut away the excess felt around the embroidery. This makes the designs stand out more, achieving a Trapunto-like effect.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted along the lines of the embroidery and make stippling around the embroidery.

We quilted the frames and the borders with wavy lines in a free motion style.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
The quilt is ready. Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
